Rural Education Matters – May 2011
By Scott Marshall
Rural Education Matters (REM) approved the final wording on their 501c3 application in April. The application has been submitted to the IRS for approval.
The board members recently held a work session with their accountant, Pat Sweeney of Crosky & Lanni, and MAPSA consultant, Stephanie Van Koevering. This was a session on school budgets as well as a question and answer session for Ms. Van Koevering, whom also operates a charter school.
REM continues to await a response from Saginaw Valley as they complete their decision making process regarding which applicant(s) they will take to phase 2. In the meanwhile the members of REM have challenged themselves to continue to educate the community of options, programs, and solutions for rural education.
In April REM was represented at both the Ogemaw Business Expo and the Houghton Lake Business Expo. Brochures, flyers, and contact information were provided to expo visitors. May 18th starting at 3:00pm REM will be at the Roscommon Business Expo at the CRAF Center. Community members are encouraged to attend.
Regular board meetings are held the 1st Thursday of the month at the Richfield Township Hall starting at 7pm. Visit www.REM1234.com for more information or call (989)632-1114.
